Topic relevant to the {{Artwork}}
template - would appreciate your opinion!
[edit]Hello @Jarekt, I hope all is well. Sad to read above that you are not attending Wikimania but I hope you have a great time at the other conference!
I have posted a topic relevant to SDC updates to the {{Artwork}}
template here. It aims to discuss an agreed data model for those cases where the artwork does not (yet) have a Wikidata item. This occurs very frequently and it would be absolutely awesome if we can 1) come to an agreement on how to model this with SDC and 2) if you could find some time to support that agreed model in the template. So I am very curious to hear your opinion. I suggest we continue the discussion on the talk page over there? All my best, Spinster (talk) 08:05, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- Two new parser functions will be available this week:
{{#dir}}
and{{#bcp47}}
. These will reduce the need forTemplate:Dir
andTemplate:BCP47
on Commons and allow us to drop 100 million rows from the "what links here" database. Editors at any wiki that use these templates, can help by replacing the templates with these new functions. The templates at Commons will be updated during the Hackathon at Wikimania. [1][2] - Communities can request the activation of the visual editor on entire namespaces where discussions sometimes happen (for instance Wikipedia: or Wikisource: namespaces) if they understand the known limitations. For discussions, users can already use DiscussionTools in these namespaces.
- The tracking category "Pages using Timeline" has been renamed to "Pages using the EasyTimeline extension" in TranslateWiki. Wikis that have created the category locally should rename their local creation to match.
Project updates
- Editors who help to organize WikiProjects and similar on-wiki collaborations, are invited to share ideas and examples of successful collaborations with the Campaigns and Programs teams. You can fill out a brief survey or share your thoughts on the talkpage. The teams are particularly looking for details about successful collaborations on non-English wikis.
- The new parser is being rolled out on Wikivoyage wikis over the next few months. The English Wikivoyage and Hebrew Wikivoyage were switched to Parsoid last week. For more information, see Parsoid/Parser Unification.

Hi Jarekt, your edit didn't work out as expected. 0x0a (talk) 11:05, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- 0x0a, thanks for letting me know. I did some experiments and found out that unlike templates parser function names have to use lower case spelling, so that was the issue with that edit. "#dir" instead of "#Dir". --Jarekt (talk) 12:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Help with a template
[edit]Hello @Jarekt. The templates on Commons are a bit complicated; therefore I decided to write to you for some help. Basically, on May 27, 2019, a law on state property was enacted, which declared works of certain artist and 11 films public domain in Azerbaijan [3]. I wanted to create a template as {{SP-Azerbaijan}} (SP for state property; a term used for public domain), but saw there were many subpages and thought I'd screw it up. Could you help to create it? A {{{1|}}} and {{{2|}}} would be cool. Here's the text:
{{SP-Azerbaijan|2019|author}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of this author were declared a state property.
{{SP-Azerbaijan|2019|film}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this film were declared a state property.
Thank you! Toghrul R (talk) 16:04, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- Toghrul R, Most Public domain templates on commons Start with "PD" so maybe we can name it {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan}} or {{DP-Azerbaijan}}? Also it is easier to use PD template if it does not have parameters so that we do not have to deal with the cases where they are missing or wrong, or at least decide on behavior of the template when that happens. So maybe {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}} so we can add another template in case there is another law change. Another potential issue is works of multiple authors when one uses this template or works where someone combines a screen shot from SP movie with other content. In such a case a better design would be
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author|Q3182477}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of John Smith were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film|Q189505}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, film Jaws was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of this author were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this film was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}}, {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|hello}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this work was declared a state property.
- How does this sound? --Jarekt (talk) 13:41, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Jarekt thank you for the reply! Yes, creating a separate template for the 2019 version and having the naming convention are good ideas. It's been 5 years since the law adopted, so if a new one rolls out, we might simply create another. Toghrul R (talk) 16:52, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Toghrul R, I Created preliminary version of {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}}.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author|Q3101199}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of Qatran Tabrizi were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film|Q6577803}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, film Sevil was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of this author were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this film was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this work was declared a state property.
- Is there a list of Wikidata IDs (like d:Q3101199 for Qatran Tabrizi) for 35 authors whose works were listed. Also can you point me to some explanation of the concept of "state property" and why Azerbaijan's state property is equivalent to Public Domain, or allowed on Commons. --Jarekt (talk) 20:10, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- AbuseFilter editors and maintainers can now make a CAPTCHA show if a filter matches an edit. This allows communities to quickly respond to spamming by automated bots. [4]
- Stewards can now specify if global blocks should prevent account creation. Before this change by the Trust and Safety Product Team, all global blocks would prevent account creation. This will allow stewards to reduce the unintended side-effects of global blocks on IP addresses.
Project updates
- Nominations are open on Wikitech for new members to refresh the Toolforge standards committee. The committee oversees the Toolforge Right to fork policy and Abandoned tool policy among other duties. Nominations will remain open until at least 2024-08-26.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in West Coast Bajau (

Igen issue
[edit]Hi Jarekt,
I have noticed an issue that appeared 1 or 2 weeks ago:
{{Igen|T|+|s=c|S*|gf}} is used to define a SVG Coat-of-arms (text-editor-created) without specifying the author, i.e. it's not meant to display a user's name, but since a recent change in a template it adds "by v." string, and now shows "this coat of arms was created with a text editor by v." while it was showing "this coat of arms was created with a text editor" only… (example) (Inkscape userless template ex. here)
Which is odd…
--Kontributor 2K (talk) 07:24, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K I am always supper confused by Igen template, so many impenetrable short names and codes, which I am sure save space, but make the template calls in the files and source code of the template rather unreadable to me. I searched but so far did not figured out how string "this coat of arms was created with a text editor by v." is created. What is the recent changes in the template you mentioned? --Jarekt (talk) 18:45, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- The recent change is that it should not display the default-string "by v." and the end of the string "this coat of arms was created with a text editor", like it was before, and like it is on Inkscape-no-user-specified-created files, where it only displays "this coat of arms was created with Inkscape." and not "this coat of arms was created with Inkscape by v."…
- Changes have been made recently on Template:Created_with_Text_Editor, which may be the one concerned, and also on Template:Image_generation ("darkmode")…
- I'd love to debug by going back step-by-step on each change made, but luckily I'm not allowed to

Missing Information
[edit]What's your current take on this: Commons:Bots/Work_requests#Media_missing_infobox_template. I noticed you added a category a few years back. I fixed a few + a bunch of unrelated issues. Enhancing999 (talk) 03:11, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
